1. Alien

While returning from a deep-space mission, the crew of the commercial spaceship Nostromo is awakened by a supposed SOS call from a system they are passing through. Descending to the planet's surface, they discover a strange derelict spaceship - the apparent source of the transmission - and one of the crew descends into the hold. What he finds are thousands of strange alien eggs. While examining one of the eggs, it hatches and the parasite inside attacks him. After returning to the Nostromo the crew takes off again to head for Earth. The alien parasite subsequently dies and all seems well again. 2. The Thing

3. The Exorcist

The film quickly became a nationwide sensation, leading to religious boycotts, fainting, and a huge box office return. 5. The Night of Living Dead

Bloodthirsty zombies like human flesh. The movie that started production of zombie movies. The dead come back to life and eat the living in this low budget, black and white film. Several people barricade themselves inside a rural house in an attempt to survive the night. Outside are hordes of relentless, shambling zombies who can only be killed by a blow to the head.

6. Cloverfield

2008 Director: Matt Reeves
A group of friends throw a party for Rob, who is leaving New York to go and work in Japan. As the party progresses, however, violent shakes and explosions herald the arrival of an unknown creature, which begins its rampage by throwing the head of the Statue of Liberty down into a street. Told from the viewfinder of their video camera, Cloverfield shows how Rob and his friends venture deep into the streets of New York, determined to rescue Rob's true love from her destroyed apartment building in midtown.

7. 28 Days Later

8. Halloween

On a cold Halloween night in Haddonfield, Illinois in 1963, six year old Michael Myers brutally murdered his teenage sister after she had sex with her boyfriend. Michael is then locked inside Smith's Grove Warren County Sanitarium where he is placed under the care of Dr. Sam Loomis who is the only one who sees the pure evil within the soul of Michael. In October 1978, Michael escapes from the sanitarium. After witnessing the escape, Dr. Loomis heads back to Haddonfield where he knows Michael will kill again on Halloween night. Michael begins stalking three teenagers, Laurie Strode and her friends Annie and Lynda. With the help of the town sheriff, Loomis hunts for Michael and hopes to put an end to his grisly murder spree.

9. The Birds

10. Psycho

1960 Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Psycho is  horror directed by Alfred Hitchcock, from the screenplay by Joseph Stefano. It is based on the novel of the same name by Robert Bloch, which was in turn inspired by the crimes of Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein.[1] The film depicts the encounter between a secretary, Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), who is in hiding at a motel after embezzling from her employer, and the motel's owner, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), and the aftermath of their encounter.

11. The Shining

1980 Director: Stanley Kubrick
The Shining is a 1980 horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick, based on Stephen King's novel of the same name. Though not initially successful, the film has had status as a cult film for years. It has since gone on to broad mainstream success, now being frequently ranked as one of the best horror films in history and its iconic imagery deeply embedded throughout popular culture, although there was a long interval between its release and its achievement of iconic status. Kubrick co-wrote the screenplay with novelist Diane Johnson. The film stars Jack Nicholson as tormented writer Jack Torrance, Shelley Duvall as his wife, Wendy, and Danny Lloyd as their son, Danny.
The film tells the story of a writer, Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), who accepts the job of the winter caretaker at a hotel which always gets snowed in during the winter.

12. Grindhouse

2007 Director: Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino
Grindhouse is a 2007 film co-written, produced, and directed by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. The film is a double feature consisting of two feature-length segments, Robert Rodriguez directed Planet Terror and Quentin Tarantino directed Death Proof, and bookended by fictional trailers for upcoming attractions, advertisements, and in-theater announcements.

13. Invasion of the Body Snatchers

1956 Director: Don Siegel
Dr Miles Bennell returns his small town practice to find several of his patients suffering the paranoid delusion that their friends or relatives are impostors. He is initially skeptical, especially when the alleged dopplegängers are able to answer detailed questions about their victim's lives, but he is eventually persuaded that something odd has happened and determines to find out what is causing this phenomenon. This film can be seen as a paranoid 1950s warning against Communism.
The Movie was remade in 1978 and 2007.
 

14. Drag Me to Hell

2009 Director: Sam Raimi
The Drag Me to Hell is a horror story of Los Angeles loan officer Christine Brown (Alison Lohman), who tries to impress her boss by refusing to extend a loan to Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver). In retaliation, Ganush places a curse on Christine which, if not passed on to someone else within three days, will plunge her into the depths of Hell to burn for eternity.

15. Frankenstein

1931 Director: James Whale
Dr. Frankenstein creates a monster from various posthumous 'donors' and combines them into a massive creature, to whom he wishes to bestow life. The movie centers on this monster and his struggle in this life after death.

16. Rosemary's Baby

1968 Director: Roman Polanski
After receiving a warning from a friend, Rosemary investigates and confirms that her neighbors are the leaders of a coven of witches, and she suspects they are after her child to use it as a sacrifice. However, she is unable to convince anyone to believe her. She is wrong about the coven's reason for wanting the baby, but the truth is even more horrific than she imagined.
The movie is followed by Son of Rosemary (1997)

17. Shaun of the Dead

2004 Director: Edgar Wright
Zombie romantic horror comedy. The plot focuses on Shaun, a young man who is attempting to get some kind of focus in his life as he reconciles with his ex-girlfriend and settles his various issues with his mother and stepfather. At the same time he has to cope with an apocalyptic uprising of zombies that is destroying society.

18. Sin City

2005 Director: Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino
Film noir based on Miller's graphic novel series of the same name. “Sin City” is violent, surprisingly humorous, sexy, innovative, provocative, visually stunning, relentlessly entertaining, and a movie that delivers something even the most jaded of moviegoers haven’t seen before. Gorgeous and gory, a graphic film noir taken to the nth level, “Sin City” is not just for devotees of Frank Miller. I’ve never read “Sin City” and it didn’t affect my viewing pleasure one iota.

The zombies have taken over the earth. The surviving humans live on a small secluded strip of land, with two sides cut off by rivers. The humans strive to survive, while outside the zombies are steadily evolving.
